Plasticizing barrels engineered and produced to increase service life over time

MRS plasticizing barrels are manufactured to quality standards that deliver maximum wear resistance in the plasticizing process. Production is performed in-house using high-quality, certified special steels.

MRS’s metallurgical experience and know-how enable, depending on process requirements, the selection of nitrided barrels or the more high-performance bimetallic version.

Nitrided construction

Plasticizing barrels made with nitriding steels. The nitride layer developed during nitriding provides wear resistance and excellent service life under standard operating conditions.

This is the correct techno-economic choice for processing virgin polymers without mineral fillers at normal working pressures and temperatures.

Bimetallic construction

Bimetallic plasticizing barrels are metallurgically produced from two different alloys. Inside the bore of a specific steel bar, a compact and homogeneous alloy layer is centrifugally cast at high temperature. The high hardness values and constant properties across the thickness of the centrifuged overlay ensure resistance to the various stresses.

This bimetallic construction makes it possible to select and use base materials and alloys best suited to each application, guaranteeing resistance to abrasion, corrosion, or their combination, even at high processing temperatures.
